CALGARY Art Events Nov 07 to Nov 30 - Morgan Sea Thomson: Citizen Justice in the Cow-Town of Tomorrows Reception at the Epcor Centre for the Performing Arts, Wednesday, Oct.8th at 7:00pm. Performance ongoing from Oct.3rd - Oct.12th Calgary is a booming Metropolis, minus one important part, a costumed hero to save us from the corporate never-do-wells. Enter Citizen Justice, who has heard the call of distress from hundreds of low-income artists feeling the cow-town crunch. Citizen Justice will be living in Stride's Plus 15 window gallery for ten days in October. Mirroring the Calgary Stampede, Justice will be living the dream of being a superhero, patrolling downtown and lend a helping hand.
Citizen Justice, the low-budget "batman" people are calling the bastard son of MacGyver and Captain Planet. The truth is Justice was raised by the unconditional love of single Mother in Bridge City Saskatchewan. An over-exposure to televised radiation left him with an enhanced sense of purpose and spectacle. In an effort to thwart man-made doom, Justice spends his days concerned about the environment, overcoming mass-media manipulation and making crafts out of garbage. Occasionally, Citizen Justice assumes the alias of Morgan Sea, an androgynous video and performance artist living in Montreal. Stride Gallery Address: 1004 Macleod Tr SE Calgary AB T2G 2M7 1-403-262-8507
Nov 07 to Nov 08 - Clark Ferguson: In Search of Desire Opening at Stride Friday, Oct.10th from 8:00pm - midnight In Search of Desire is an ongoing absurdist exploration into the existential investigations that envelope consciousness. The work consists of several bodies of work: Teenage Wasteland (2006), The Ratspectacla (2007), Dead Meat (2008), and The Helecycle (2008). Teenage Wasteland, the first work in the series, takes on an immediately nihilistic approach as the work questions whether the creation of meaning (such as the creation of art) is as meaningless and circularly irrelevant as time spent masturbating. The Ratspectacla utilizes the conventions of the spectacle and of the film ‘horror’ genre so as to deconstruct why we choose to contemplate mortality through these illusions. By subverting expectations, Ferguson’s intention is for the viewer to contemplate why it is human nature to explore the horrifying unknowns of life within the context of the spectacle and through this ‘play-terror’; simply put, it is both thrilling and non-consequential. Dead Meat is an imagined road trip/experience that takes place in the artist’s studio space. By combining live action and miniature, a character experiences a subjective reality that conforms to his expectation of self. And last but not least, or maybe least, The Helecycle examines the spirit of purpose and determination and the gray areas between success and failure. Another example of how subjective realities are, at times for different individuals, relative. The projects serve as existential investigations and as an ongoing search for meaning.
Clark Ferguson is a Saskatchewan based visual artist interested in the spectacle, humour, and issues of gender and sexuality. His practice utilizes video, photography, performance, print-media, and installation to create experimental, eccentric projects. Ferguson is also interested in working within self-imposed limitations that define in what manner work is developed and produced. These ‘impositions’ mirror the conceptual interests that he is exploring. This process not only effects the final product becomes part of the research and is in effect, a performative aspect of the work. Stride Gallery Address: 1004 Macleod Tr SE Calgary AB T2G 2M7 Phone: 1 403 262-8507 Oct.10th, 2008 - The Cedar Tavern Singers AKA Les Phonoréalistes: Art Snob Solutions, Phase II: The Age of Mechanical Opening at Stride Friday, Oct.10th from 8:00 pm - midnight. Performance on Friday, Oct.10th at 9:30 pm Stride Gallery
Nov 07 to Nov 08 - Art Snob Solutions, Phase II Art Snob Solutions, Phase II: The Age of Mechanical Reproduction by the Cedar Tavern Singers AKA Les Phonoréalistes is an exhibition of ambiguous objects, images, videos and sounds that evoke a love for and a satirizing of both the ambitions of Modern Art history and the DIY ethos of folk and lo-fi indie music. Through the process of remixing, themes and ideas are mashed up to highlight and re-present esoteric information beyond the textbook in unconventional ways. This exhibition explores the sort of passion that compels a teenager to pin a shaky hand-rendered Morrissey drawing to his or her wall—except in this case, Morrissey is likely to be substituted with Baldessari.
Daniel Wong is an interdisciplinary artist from Lethbridge, Alberta working in a range of forms including installation, performance, writing, drawing, and music. He received a BFA from the University of Lethbridge in 2003 and an MFA from the University of Western Ontario in 2006.
Mary-Anne McTrowe has a BFA from the University of Lethbridge (1998) and an MFA from Concordia University in Montreal (2001). Her work has spanned a number of media, and recent interests include the crocheting of cozies for everyday objects and the proposing of ever-larger cozies for natural and man-made architecture, and performance and static work about the sasquatch.
It was during a thematic residency in 2006, perhaps under the influence of cabin fever, at the Banff Centre, that Daniel joined talents with Mary-Anne to form the Cedar Tavern Singers AKA Les Phonoréalistes, to fight the good fight and sing the good song (and occasionally the bad song).
